Oven Mitt

Oven MittTwo Oven MittsDo you like quick, easy projects?  Me too!  Making oven mitts are great and they make awesome gifts, especially paired with a cute apron.  You'll definitely want to make a few for yourself as well.

If you've done our pot holder tutorial, you'll find some parts of the process to be similar.  I do consider the oven mitt to be a little more advance than the pot holder, but I think that's because you're sometimes dealing with a lot of layers.  In this situation, I do find it helpful to have a walking foot.  If you haven't purchased a walking foot attachment for your machine, let me strongly recommend one.  It comes in handy for me all the time and you'll wonder how you did without one for so long!

I really love making oven mitts though, mostly because I love working with cute cotton prints and, with this project, I can use all the cute cotton prints I've stashed in my fabric collection.  It's just fun and makes me smile.

There's a free pattern download for this project.  Just make sure you're logged in to be able to download it.  You'll find the download box above, just below the video player.

Thanks for the tutorial. My sister is moving into a new home and I wanted to make her some oven mitts. I am new to sewing and this tutorial helped me make some cute kitty cat oven mitts.

The file that gets downloaded from our site is a .zip file. winzip is a program that can extract the .zip file to get to the .pdf inside. I don’t know what your screen looks like but when winzip opens, look for the file called ppc_ovenMitt_pattern.pdf. Drag that on your desktop and now you have the pattern.

Thank you very much for your generosity of giving out free oven mitt pattern. I wish i have downloaded your pattern earlier when i first attempted on making my first oven mitt. It didn’t turn out as perfect. I will definitely try making another one with your pattern. 🙂

My husband loves to cook but has constantly burnt his fingers using the store-bought oven mitts, so I was delighted to find your pattern. I made a pair of mitts for him, and he has tested them out over the past couple of weeks, and he is a very happy man, no more burns…So, I am now in the process of making more. I do however, like to make my own bias binding. I make it out of the same fabric as the lining, and just cut straight strips for it, as it does not need to curve, it does not need to be cut on the bias. I just find that I do not like the store bought bias binding, THANKS FOR THE GREAT PATTERN!

I have been using a “Sharps” needle but still found it difficult to sew over the bias binding, loop etc when joining it all together. Although, I must admit that my bias binding is thicker, as I made my own from the same fabric as the lining. Now I have discovered that there are special needles for Quilting, Klasse brand, they have the word “Quilting” marked on the front of the packet. I have bought a packet of those but haven’t tried them yet.
