Oven Mitt

Oven MittTwo Oven MittsDo you like quick, easy projects?  Me too!  Making oven mitts are great and they make awesome gifts, especially paired with a cute apron.  You'll definitely want to make a few for yourself as well.

If you've done our pot holder tutorial, you'll find some parts of the process to be similar.  I do consider the oven mitt to be a little more advance than the pot holder, but I think that's because you're sometimes dealing with a lot of layers.  In this situation, I do find it helpful to have a walking foot.  If you haven't purchased a walking foot attachment for your machine, let me strongly recommend one.  It comes in handy for me all the time and you'll wonder how you did without one for so long!

I really love making oven mitts though, mostly because I love working with cute cotton prints and, with this project, I can use all the cute cotton prints I've stashed in my fabric collection.  It's just fun and makes me smile.

There's a free pattern download for this project.  Just make sure you're logged in to be able to download it.  You'll find the download box above, just below the video player.

I have a Janome sewing machine, and it has a “double lift” for extra thick things like quilts. When you lift the foot with the lever, if you want it to go higher, you push the lever up again and hold it up. It will not stay in this second position without the lever being held up, but it goes quite high. You just need to make sure to let the foot all the way down before you begin sewing. If the second lift has not been used before, it may be a little stiff, and to quote the lady from Janome “you need to show it who is Boss” This lever also needs to be used to attach some of the specialized sewing feet. I do not know if this feature is on other brands of sewing machines, but I imagine it would be. Hope this helps.

And you’re just using regular cotton fabric? hmmm…I haven’t had a problem getting it all to fit 🙁 Maybe your foot clearance is a little shallower than my machine. I’m sorry, I can’t think of any solutions in getting the sandwich to smoosh down flatter.

Loved this project, I do have one question. I used my walking foot, but sewing the two panels together was very difficult because it was so thick, I could hardly get it under the needle. Any helpful hints for my next try?

Great video! You used the same fat quarter (cats) that I’d purchased to make something for my boyfriend (he loves cats). Now, my decision is made. He’ll get an oven mitt! Love it. Really simple when the fabric is quilted before it’s cut!

It’s just like any other sewing machine foot so you have to buy one specific for your brand of machine. I definitely think you’re due a new machine! 🙂

Everything seems so simple with your instructions. Thank you for making these videos. I would like to know if the special walking foot is working for all sewing machines or should I buy one specific for mine which is a Morse I bought about …. let me count….about 30 years ago. Am I entitled for a new one?
