When push comes to shove, I will admit to being a pants girl.  It's fun to wear skirts and pretty dresses, but I feel the most comfortable in pants.  I just love wearing pants and when I get a pair of awesome pants that fit me really well, then I am the happiest girl in the world.

Luckily, I know how to make my own pants pattern that uses my own measurements so that it's totally customized to me.  And luckily for you, I'm here to show you how you can do it too.  It seems intimidating, but it's not as hard you'd think.  Like our basic skirt pattern, there is a bit of math involved and it's a little more complicating, so I don't recommend this tutorial for beginners.  But when you're ready, I'll be with you every step of the way.  You just have to tell yourself that you refuse to be intimidated and you can do it.

The best part is that once you get your block made, usually you just have to make a few tweaks to perfect it and then once it's perfect, you'll go back to it time and time again.  From there you can create your pattern for the basic pants pattern (which are high waisted, pleated pants) or do some adjustments and create a different style of pants.  That's what's so nice, because each time you do a different style, you know that it's still going to fit because you've done all the heavy lifting on creating your block.

If you don't know how to assemble your pieces after you cut them out, don't worry, because we will have a tutorial demonstrating this.  Soon, you will be like me and have several stylish versions of these pants in all different colors.

You might be able to interchange the two in something like a skirt but for these pants I wouldn’t recommend it. With a dart, you’re tapering from the waistline until about the hipline. A pleat will cinch it in at the top but will probably not taper it in so you may have to alter the seam allowance to make it look fitted at the sides.

Our tutorial on the cigarette pants show you how to taper the leg so it’s skinnier 🙂

hello great video what if we wanted the pants to be kind of like a skinny jean and we did not want the panys leg to be so wide?

I hear that! As your fellow shorty mcshortshort, it’s the greatest thing in the world to have a pair of pants that aren’t way too long. Also with the high waist, I feel like it makes my legs look longer. 🙂

I can’t wait to get started, I’ve always had problems finding pants that fit because I’m short, so thanks for teaching me the clear way of doing this without being confused and giving up on making my own pants.

These pants are pretty simple to convert to the cigarette pant style and they are so awesome. I made myself a pair and I want to make one in every bright color imaginable. These pants are my Katharine Hepburn and the cigarette are my Audrey Hepburn. Hooray for the Hepburns. 🙂
