You can have the flexibility of using a drawstring while not worrying about your pants falling completely down when undoing the drawstring. While the techniques are similar to doing an elastic waistband, there are some tips showing how easily it is in converting the waistband into a drawstring one, including using buttonholes for something other than for buttons.
