    Hello Professor Pincushion!
My mother in law is asking me to make her a new bathrobe from an antique she’s had forever. I would hate to seam rip such a beautiful piece in order to recreate this garment, is there a way to make it perfect without taking apart the original garment to use as a pattern?

I guess it depends on how elaborate this bathrobe is, but if it’s pretty basic, you should be able to do it without removing any stitches. Have you seen our tutorials on how to duplicate simple tops and intermediate tops? Yes, this is a bathrobe and not a top but the process is very similar. Just take one section at a time. I think sleeves are normally the hardest part for people but I show you how to do it in our simple tops tutorial. When you have a copy of all your patterns, buy some cheap fabric and just baste a muslin together to see how it looks, you can always tweak your patterns until you get it right.
