Hi There!! I’ve just discovered sewing and this site has been so valuable in the short amount of time I’ve been clicking around!

As I try projects that involve straight seams I’m having a hard time just cutting the fabric straight (or on grain I suppose). Any tricks for making sure when I cut I’m doing so in a straight line and staying parallel to the edge?? I haven’t really been following patterns just trying to measure out different sized squares on my fabric

Welcome to our site! 🙂 I understand what you mean. I’ve been doing this for a long time and my cutting is still not perfect. Just remember not to be too hard on yourself. It also depends on what you’re cutting out. Usually cutting out fleece or cotton is going to be easier to cut out than say chiffon or silky fabric. If you’re fabric is slippery, you can pin your fabric to tissue paper first. You can also invest in a rotary cutter, ruler and mat. This makes cutting out straight lines a breeze. Normally you use a 45mm rotary cutter. If you cut out curvier edges, I would go with a smaller size blade. If you’re interested in rotary cutting, check out this tutorial
