    Hi there,

I have a dress pattern with a curved hem. I am wanting to add a lace overlay on the skirt and also want to use the selvedge edge as the hem. Can you suggest a way to make this work? Do I straighten the hem of the pattern, changing the shape of the skirt? or can I adjust how the lace sits ?

    Thanks!

So I’m assuming the skirt pattern is a similar shape to a circle skirt. For something like that, there really isn’t a way to lay it out and make sure that a straight edge is going to end up on the edge of a curved hemline. One suggestion is to cut out the overlay like the pattern suggest, baste the overlay to the lining, around the whole perimeter of the skirt so it’s like one piece. Do a normal hem, but add a trim like a satin ribbon to the hemline after the skirt is hemmed. You’ll get a similar or maybe even a better effect and less of a headache. Please post a pic when you finish your project 🙂

Thanks a bunch for your advice. I decided to use hemming tape…
