Smocking is a very old technique of fabric manipulation where the fabric is given a design and texture through the use of folds. This is all done by hand sewing at certain points on the back of the fabric. There are different designs of smocking you can do. In this particular tutorial, we'll show you how to do lattice smocking. The name comes from the fabric design looking like that of a lattice fence. Similar to all hand smocking, this technique can be very time consuming but it looks so beautiful when completed. It also will shrink the fabric by quite a bit so you'll want to do the smocking to your fabric prior to sewing your pieces together. Lattice smocking my seem complex but it's actually quite simple and can be done by anyone with patience.
