oh goodness, that is a pickle but I did laugh a your orangutan comparison. Maybe you should consider donating it to a zoo or circus, haha. You can take in the underarm seam to make it smaller, but then you run into the trouble of making the armholes too tight. And even if you finish and he can still fit his arms through, you still need to make sure there’s enough ease so he can still raise his arms and have basic movement. As much as it’s a pain in the neck, the best way to shorten the sleeves is at the bottom, by removing the cuff, shortening and recreating the placket and replacing the cuff. I think the easiest way for doing a new placket is the just slit the sleeve the same length and then use a narrow bias tape to finish the raw edges.
