This is what I think you are doing. When you download the pattern, it is a .zip file. That cannot be viewed by a PDF viewer. What needs to happen is, double click the .zip file open it and extract the .pdf that is inside (drag the file that is inside somewhere on your computer). Now you have a .pdf file and can view it with a .pdf viewer.
