Most machines can probably handle lightweight denim but you really need a heavy duty sewing machine to get through the heavy stuff or you could mess up some of the inside sewing machine mechanics. You can try on some scraps to see how it does but I would take it slow. You might always want to send Janome an email and see what they suggest.
